Catch Basin Facts...

Many property owners do not realize the importance of catch basins and the property maintenance required.

Did you know that catch basins are designed to fail after initial installation?  True fact.

When catch basins are installed in new asphalt, they are designed to shift with the settling ground.  This shifting causes premature collapsing, which requires the catch basin to be rebuilt within the first few years of installation.

THIS IS OUR SPECIALTY!

Other causes for catch basin failures:

  • The joints between asphalt and the catch basin are not sealed, allowing water to infiltrate along outside.  This is often not noticed for long periods of time, allowing slow but progressive deterioration.

  • Catch basins installed in brick-and-mortar fashion allow water to seep in between the blocks and bricks.  Water is the number one factor in mortar joints degrading and eventually causing collapse.  This is especially true in areas of the country with heavy freeze thaw cycles.

  • If the catch basin structure is pre-cast or concrete, most often bricks and mortar are used to adjust the top of the structure to match the parking surface.  These adjustment bricks normally fail first, just like a block-built unit.

  • When the bricks, blocks or mortar fail, the frame and grate begin to sink to sink and eventually collapse under the stress weight from traffic.

  • Failed or collapsed catch basins are an extreme liability.  Not only to vehicular traffic but to pedestrians as well.  Immediate repair is required.
